Description

A classic Italian dessert made with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and a rich mascarpone cream.


Ingredients

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
  • 1/2 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 24 ladyfingers
  • Cocoa powder for dusting


Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until pale and creamy.
  2. Heat milk in a saucepan until just boiling, then slowly whisk into the egg mixture.
  3. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat until thickened, stirring constantly.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool.
  5. In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  6. Fold mascarpone cheese into the cooled egg mixture, then gently fold in the whipped cream.
  7. In a shallow dish, combine coffee and coffee liqueur.
  8. Dip ladyfingers into the coffee mixture briefly, then layer them in a dish.
  9. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.
  10. Repeat the layers with the remaining ladyfingers and mascarpone mixture.
  11. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  12. Before serving, dust with cocoa powder.

Notes

  • For a stronger coffee flavor, use espresso instead of brewed coffee.
  • Make sure not to soak the ladyfingers too long in the coffee mixture.
  • Can be made a day in advance for better flavor.
