Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • Red food coloring
  • Crushed candy canes for topping


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until smooth.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
  6. Divide the dough in half; to one half, add peppermint extract and red food coloring.
  7. Roll out small pieces of each dough into ropes and twist them together to form candy cane shapes.
  8. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden.
  10. Sprinkle crushed candy canes on top while still warm.
