A delicious and comforting dessert made from stale bread, milk, eggs, and sugar, often flavored with vanilla and spices.
Ingredients
- 4 cups of stale bread, cubed
- 2 cups of milk
- 1 cup of sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup of raisins (optional)
- Butter for greasing the baking dish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a baking dish with butter.
- In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread and milk, allowing it to soak for about 10 minutes.
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
- Mix the egg mixture into the soaked bread until well combined.
- If using, fold in the raisins.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted comes out clean.
- Let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Serve warm with a drizzle of cream or a scoop of ice cream.
- Can be made a day in advance and reheated before serving.
- Experiment with different spices like nutmeg or add chocolate chips for variation.
